Memorial

Wapenschild Stad Oudenburg

In 2004 an appeal was addressed to the Patriotic Associations of whether they were planning something on the occasion of the anniversary of the liberation of Belgium, then 60 years back. Since we are here not to be envied Westkerke "happiness", here casualties from the Second World War are buried, we in the administration of local NSB (Nationale Strijders Bond) Division Westkerke decided at a memorial ceremony to link to. Hitherto (2004), these four allies have never been in any tribute or memorial involved. In the year 2006, it was 65 years ago that she died. The embassies of Canada, New Zealand and England were represented to them to pay tribute to their fallen countrymen. Also mr. Paul Breyne (the governor of the province of West Flanders) paid tribute to the four war victims. We hope to set commemoration each year to continue. Westkerke continues his mini - soldiers resting place in honor. A resting place that history will be remembered as one of the smallest military cemeteries in Europe of the second world war. Also listed is the military cemetery a tangible reminder and let us reflect on the futility of any war.
